Hawthorn Glen Rules & Regulations

Below are the rules and regulations enforced to ensure the safety and well-being of a patrons utilizing Hawthorn Glen.  All visitors shall adhere to the rules and regulations set by Milwaukee Recreation. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

  • Outdoor facilities and permits are subject to all municipal ordinances in addition to all rules and regulations governing outdoor facilities and can be terminated immediately at the discretion of the MPS Department of Recreation & Community Services (Milwaukee Recreation). Permits issued must be presented on site in order to ensure access.
  • A permit application may be denied for the following reasons:
    • The permit application is not received two (2) weeks prior to the event.
    • The requestor has outstanding fees owed to Milwaukee Recreation.
    • The proposed event is unauthorized by Milwaukee Recreation.
    • The proposed event is outside the scope of a “recreational event” as determined by Milwaukee Recreation.
  • The permit holder will be responsible for the costs incurred in connection with use of the facility. The current costs and payment schedule are outlined on the Permit Application. The premises must be left in a clean and orderly condition. Additional costs may be incurred if additional clean-up is needed after the event.  Groups will be liable for any damage to property or loss and damage to equipment. Groups may also forfeit rights to any further permits. • Use of Milwaukee Public Schools outdoor facilities shall not be granted to individuals or groups whose purpose in using the facilities is for fundraising activities or to make a commercial gain or personal profit.
  • The use/possession of alcohol, tobacco, controlled substances, pepper spray and weapons are strictly prohibited on any property of Milwaukee Public Schools.  • Food and drink vendors of any kind are not permitted at Milwaukee Public Schools outdoor facilities.
  • Inflatable structures of any kind, including bounce houses, dunk tanks etc., are strictly prohibited.
  • No patron vehicles are permitted to drive in or on any Milwaukee Public Schools outdoor facilities.  A designated parking lot is available for permit holders.
  • The use of tents requiring stakes is prohibited. Pop-up tents secured with weights are permitted.
  • Grilling of any kind is strictly prohibited including but not limited to charcoal and propane.
  • Permit holder cancellations must be made through Milwaukee Recreation. Full refunds are granted up to 30 days prior to the scheduled rental date. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations made less than 30 days prior to the schedule rental date.
  • Milwaukee Public Schools events and Milwaukee Recreation events have priority over all outside groups.
  • As a nature center the presence of loud music, drones, sky lanterns, piñata, balloons and water balloons are prohibited.
  • Dogs and other pets are not permitted. Hawthorn Glen is a home for wildlife.
  • Please refrain from littering. Kindly place all trash in garbage receptacle.
  • No bicycles are allowed in the facility or on the trails.
  • Trails are designated for hikers, walkers and runners.
  • Secure all bicycles at entrance gates.
  • Picking or collecting plant or animal material is forbidden by both Milwaukee Public Schools and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Everything should remain for others to see.
  • Fires are allowed only in picnic campfire areas and must be extinguished before leaving. Firewood is available for $5 a bundle on site. Dead wood should remain to help build the topsoil.
  • Water is available only at an outdoor fountain. Taking water from indoors, in any form (i.e. jug, squirt toy, water balloon or otherwise) is not allowed.
  • Golf and baseball are prohibited. Hawthorn Glen is not conducive to these types of organized sports.
  • Please stay on marked trails and exit the facility before dark. Hawthorn Glen closes at dusk, year-round.
  • Meetings or gatherings shall be divested of religious, social or class bias.
  • Please refrain from discussions or actions which are contrary to public welfare, public order, or subversive of American institutions.
  • Displaying or distributing literature of any kind is prohibited.
  • If group attendance exceeds the number registered on the permit, a fee of $1.00 per person will be applied accordingly.
  • Permits may be revoked by the staff member in charge of the facility due to misconduct, misuse or abuse of property and facilities or for noncompliance with the rules and regulations.
