Cass Street Playfield

A laughing young boy in a blue patterned shirt slides down a blue plastic slide in a colorful playground set against a backdrop of yellow autumn leaves.

Milwaukee Recreation partnered with Milwaukee Public Schools, Reflo, and the UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning to renovate Cass Street Playfield through the Green & Healthy Schools initiative. On Oct. 8, 2026, the community celebrated the newly renovated space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony!

Cass Street Playfield serves as a neighborhood park and a schoolyard, and provides a unique opportunity for collaboration to improve the entire site for school and community use.

The design includes multiple gathering areas, bioswales, and the addition of 75 stormwater trees. The inclusion of a variety of native plantings allow for unique spaces on the schoolyard that can represent natural Wisconsin ecosystems, complete with student-created signage. The vision also includes a porous, synthetic turf soccer field with an underground cistern beneath it to further manage rainwater where it falls. The plan manages approximately 200,555 gallons of stormwater per rain event.

Throughout 2024, the Green & Healthy Schools initiative and Milwaukee Recreation led community engagement events to determine programming priorities at Cass Street.
