Milwaukee Recreation's youth varsity wheelchair basketball team, the Milwaukee Heat, will play the Waukesha Thunder during a BlazeSports America Wheelchair Basketball tournament on Saturday, November 15 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Beulah Brinton Community Center, 2555 South Bay Street. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Milwaukee Heat currently holds 7th place in the BlazeSports America national ranking for varsity teams. The Waukesha Thunder is also listed in 7th place in a separate division, the BlazeSports America DIII. Each team has eight players (ages 15-18).
Milwaukee Recreation's youth wheelchair basketball program is one of many sports and recreation programs designed for individuals with disabilities. The public is invited to register for a range of adaptive sports, including rugby, tennis, hockey, and softball. Most programs cost $20 and run for 8 to 12 weeks. BlazeSports America was founded in 1996 to facilitate the Atlanta Paralympic Games, the first Paralympics ever held in the United States. In addition to year-round community-based programs, BlazeSports provides regional sports clinics, competitions, summer camps and other programs for individuals who use wheelchairs, have an amputation, have a visual impairment or blindness, or have a neurological disability such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and other related conditions. BlazeSports is currently available in 50 communities in 25 states and Washington, D.C. The programs are delivered through established parks and recreation agencies, rehabilitation facilities, and non-profit organizations.
