The Girls of Summer Softball League is an
effort which began in 2000 to create a sports program specifically
aimed at girls entering grades 4-6 in the Milwaukee area.
The league is designed to introduce girls enrolled in the
MPS Recreation Department's Summer Wrap-Around Recreation
Program and the Summer Recreation Enrichment Camps to the
game of softball.

The league was designed to emphasize success,
participation and skill development rather than competition,
and provides a vehicle to introduce girls to the game of
softball at a younger age as many girls in Milwaukee are
not exposed to softball until they are in high school. The
benefits of the league are far reaching. Participants learn
new skills, increase self-confidence, develop leadership
and team building skills, make new friends and have fun.
Over 200 girls have participated in the league each summer
since its inception.

The collaborative nature of the league is
what has made its implementation possible. Milwaukee Recreation
and the Girl Scouts of the Greater Milwaukee Area Inc.,
have teamed up with the Milwaukee Brewers to support the
Girls of Summer.
