The Adaptive Sports program is designed for individuals with orthopedic,
visual, and/or other physical/health impairments. Youth
and adults alike enjoy the program's range of competitive
sports, including swimming, track & field, bocce and
more. The newest examples are goalball (an indoor sport
designed for blind athletes that utilizes a sound-emitting
ball) and power soccer (for power chair users only). The
philosophy behind Adaptive Sports is that any sport can
be modified to meet individuals' needs. For innovative,
enriching, and competitive athletics, the MPS Adaptive Sports
office is the place to call!

Athletic Benefits
There are many reasons to become a part of
Adaptive Athletic programming. Adaptive Athletic programming
offers a unique opportunity for people with similar abilities
to come together and participate in fun and competitive
activities. "Research indicates that recreation participation
is an effective means for preventing a decline in physical,
cognitive, and psychosocial functioning. Recreation participation
reduces secondary disabilities and associated higher health
care costs." (Palaestra, Spring 2001)
